Pepsi Signs Contract to Advertise in Skyward Sword

In an effort to combat Sony’s exclusive deal with The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo Inc. announced plans to advertise their products in the next installment of Nintendo’s renowned Legend of Zelda series, “Skyward Sword”. The deal comes just days after the game’s formal announcement at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, California.

A press release issued by the companies praised the contract as “…a bold milestone in the growing importance of video games in our culture.” The contract allows for Nintendo products to be advertised on the labels of Pepsi products, ranging from snack food to soft drinks. In return, Nintendo will place advertisements in Skyward Sword, utilizing the loading screens, character dialogue and in-game mail from the mailman.

"Skyward Sword is a game where Link must travel between his home of Sky Loft and the world of Hyrule below,” stated producer Eiji Aonuma, “Our goal is to seamlessly integrate the Pepsi brand into our game in a way that will be fun and challenging for the player. One idea is a mini game that is played each time Link must travel between the two lands. Using the Wii Motion Plus, the player must guide Link through the clouds while dodging the numerous Pepsi blimps that dot the skies. Accidentally bringing down one of these blimps has no immediate consequences, but popping too many will eventually tip the scales toward the side of evil. We want to make the player feel like their actions have consequences, and this is one of the ideas we are pursuing.

Nintendo fans praised the move, stating that “Their consol [sic] won the soft drink wars” and that “The LameS3 and go drink their stupid garbage while Nintendo remembers their fans.” Sony fans responded in kind, saying “Pepsi is a little kid’s pop, where as Coke is a drink for people who want a real beverage.”

Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Jack Daniel's at this time.
