Link's Awakening
Link’s Awakening with my keen wolf senses and have uncovered the secrets to the difficult trading sequence. Would you like to know? Of course you would, that’s why you’re reading this! Well then, let The Wolfess let you in on it.
-----------------
#1~ The first item is a Yoshi Doll. If it wasn’t for the fact that we all adore Yoshi so much, the presence of Mario’s green lizard-like creature in a Zelda world would be rather odd. In order to get this item you will need to have a sword and at least ten rupees. Right in the middle of Mabe Village is a little place with grass in front of it. You’ll have to cut the grass before you enter of course. When you get inside, talk to the man to your right to play the Trendy Game.
The object of this game is to move the crane to grab items. The Yoshi doll is in the middle. You get two moves to get there, using A and B to move the crane. (A is vertical movement, B is horizontal movement.) When the shadow of the crane is right over poor little Yoshi’s head, snatch him up. Congrates, you’ve caught a Yoshi!
#2~ Item number two is a lovely red ribbon. Make your way to the north of Mabe Village where the Quadruplet’s house awaits you. Inside the house is a woman with a baby, her husband, and a bed full of kids. What luck! The woman just happens to want a Yoshi doll. Go ahead and give it to her, and she will give you the ribbon in return. Now, what do you need a red ribbon for? If Link starts walking around wearing red ribbons this Wolfess is going to be very concerned. So, onward to item number three.
#3~ Behind door number three we have a can of dog food! When we think of dogs, cats are the next reasonable thought so head on over to Madam MeowMeow’s house. Right next to it is the humble abode of a small female named Chain-chomp. Are the creatures of Mario conspiring to take over Zelda? Who knows. For now, appease her love of accessories and jewelry by trading your red ribbon for a can of dog food. Mmm…beef.
#4~ Going bananas yet? If not, well you’re about to get some because they are item four. Northeast of where your sword was found is a little house on the beach. No human lives here. Be brave and enter the house of the Alligator! He collects cans, for whatever ever reason, and goes nuts when you say you have some. Give the can of Dog Food to him and he’ll give you the Bananas in return. Leave the house of the psyco alligator and go about your business.
#5~ While you’re on the quest for the five Golden Leaves you will stumble across a monkey on the bridge. You need to cross the bridge, but the monkey won’t let you. Talk to the monkey, whose name is Kiki. Luckily you have the alligator’s bananas! Give those to her and she’ll be so grateful she’ll call together all her monkey buddies and they’ll build you a bridge to cross. Behold the power of bananas! They leave a stick behind. Yes, a STICK is the fifth trade item. I know what you’re thinking: but I could have gotten a stick anywhere! Well, maybe this one is a special stick? Anyway, snatch it up. There’s someone out there who wants that specific stick.
#6~ Honeycomb, me want Honeycomb! Well, we’re not going to run into a hairy thing with big eyes badgering us for cereal, but honeycomb is the sixth item. You need to cart that stick around until after you beat the Key Cavern. Once you’ve had your thrilling adventure there, journey to the prairie just east of Mabe Village. There’s a tree there and under it? Why, it’s your wonderful buddy Train having issues getting honeycomb out of a tree. Lend him your stick, and after he’s chased away by the bee swarm, grab the honeycomb and get out of there.
#7~ Know where the Animal Village is? Go there and head to the southeastern part of the village. See the house next to a fence with the chimney-thing next to it? That’s the home of the Bear Chef. In the tradition of Winney the Pooh, he wants honey. More specifically, he has run out of honeycomb. Give him the honeycomb and he will give you item seven in return-Pineapple! Yum!
#8~ Item number eight: the rare Hibiscus Flower. Now the items are starting to get a little more interesting than food and sticks. Luckily there’s a man named Papahl who is starving in the Tal Tal Heights. Well, lucky for you, sucks to be him. This is the dad of the Quadruplets whose wife gave you the ribbon. He’s got all those little ones at home, but he’s so famished he can’t move! Give him your pineapple when he asks for “vittles” and he will give you the Hibiscus Flower. Yey!
#9~ So, remember the Animal Village? Well, there’s a little lady there who thinks that the Hibiscus Flower you have is for her. Okay, she happens to be a goat, but she gives you item #9! Her house is located in the northeast corner of the village. Just talk to her and give her the flower. She will give you a letter in return that you are to deliver to Mr. Write north of the woods near Mabe Village.
#10~ Woo hoo, double digits! Now we’re getting somewhere. Let’s play Hyrulian Postal Service and deliver the goat’s letter to Mr. Write. He lives in a lonely little house left of the swamp, north of the woods near Mabe Village. Once he has the letter he will give you your tenth Item, but make sure to pay attention to the photo that miss goat included. It’s rather funny. Mr. Write gives you one of his few possessions: a broom.
#11~ No, you’re not going to hop on the broom and go riding it around the sky cackling and growing a large warty nose. Sorry, I know you were hoping for some magical broom to save the world with. Instead of that, head to the southwest corner of Mabe Village, where there’s a little old woman who always seems to be sweeping. Can someone say obsessive compulsive? You’d think it would clean by now. Anyway, this little old lady’s name is Ulrira and she’s broomless! How horrible! How can she be OCD without her broom? Give her yours and she will give you a fishing hook that she found sweeping the river bank.
#12~ All right, a hook! Arr, maties! Well, you can’t get the next item until you learn how to swim. Once you’ve braved the waters, swim near the bridge by the mermaid statue. This is located just south of dungeon 5, Catfish’s Maw. Press B to dive down and swim under the bridge. Use your Roc’s Feather to jump out of the water and get in the boat. There’s a fisherman near, right? Talk to him, and in return for the hook he will give you his net catch. And what he catch? Trade item number 12, a necklace! Now that’s what I call lucky.
#13~ We’re going to go above dungeon 5 now, to the mermaid in the water. Yes, this is a real mermaid, and her name is Martha, hence the name of the bay. Talk to her to find out that she has lost her necklace, how sad! Guess what the fisherman gave you, though? The very necklace she lost! Go ahead and give it to her, and she will give you a scale off of her tail in return.
#14~ Guess where we’re going now? Back to the other side of Martha’s Bay, where the statue is. Southwest of the animal village, use your hookshot to cross the water and follow the path until the mermaid statue comes into view. It is missing a scale, so walk over to it and insert the mermaid’s scale into its place. This isn’t just fixing a broken statue though: the statue moves to the left and you can descend down into one of those caves that Link seems to find himself entering so often in the Zelda games. You might bump into some invisible enemies down there, but ignore them as best as you can, the prize is up ahead. There you have item number 14: the magnifying glass! Congratulations! Essentially, you’ve completed the trading sequence!
So, you have the magnifying glass now. What can you do with it? Three things: See invisible enemies (how helpful! I happen to enjoy seeing the things that are trying to kill me, don’t you?), Get the boomerang (I’ll talk more about this in a moment), and read the book “Dark Mysteries and Secrets of Koholint.”
Now, all of these sound truly awesome. The book is in Mabe Village’s library, in the southeast corner. By reading it you discover how to move the Windfish’s Egg. It would be an excellent idea to write this down, you’re going to need it in the future when you face the final boss. It will make life so much easier!
Now, about the boomerang. In the bottom right part of the beach near the shores of Koholint is a crack in a wall. Bomb the crack to reveal yet another oh so wonderful cave. You can see the invisible monster there, but don’t attack him! He’s a friendly monster. He’ll trade you the boomerang for whatever item you equip to your B button. Most people trade their shovel after they’ve used dug up whatever’s really worth it, but don’t fret if you trade something you end up needing. You can trade back for your item whenever you want. Enjoy both the boomerang and the magnifying glass! Happy playing!
